Paolo Ventura | Winter Stories

In this interview Paolo Ventura discusses his influences, process and use of photography. He’s engaged in the long history of staging for the camera, or what A.D. Coleman termed the “Directorial Mode”.  Wonderful work that plays between memory, mood and fiction.  His monograph Winter Stories can be found at Aperture.

Textbook Review

I just received my advanced copy of the most recent volume (v. 41:1) of the photographic journal Exposure, which happens to contain my latest review! It should be hitting your mailboxes soon. If you don’t get Exposure you can visit the link above to find out how to order it!

I cover the Focal Press Encyclopedia of Photography, which is a wonderful 880 pages of photography in all its manifestations, and The Concise Focal Press Encyclopedia of Photography, which is, as its name suggests, a more focused look at photography from the perspective of media, art and academia. This volume of the journal also has a wonderful essay about Photography & Writing by Janet Zandy and includes an interview with two of the most important artists working today (who are among my absolute favorites): Mike & Doug Starn! Make sure to pickup a copy of Exposure and/or visit the links above!

Latest Review

My latest book review is out in Exposure (40:2). It covers “Hoshino’s Alaska” which includes photographs and journal entries on the late Japanese Wilderness Photographer Michio Hoshino and “Observations in an Occupied Wilderness” photographs by Terry Falke of landscapes in the Southwest. Both are quite interesting and important looks at how we view wilderness and the vast ‘scapes’ that surround us. Check it out if you received a copy or buy it here: Exposure Review
